"Chi is needed for our bodies to work, for our minds to function and to allow our spirits or 'joie de vivre' to shine."

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is the process of generating warmth on your acupuncture points by the burning of moxa cones on the skin, when you feel the heat the cone is removed. It provides a pleasant and penetrating heat, revitalising, reinforcing and invigorating.  This heat is absorbed resulting in an agreeable feeling of relaxation and well-being.  Moxa is made from a plant called 'Chinese Mugwort' (artemesia latiflora vulgaris).  For warming up larger areas of your body, you may have moxa sticks.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine, originating in China over 3000 years ago.  The Chinese observed that the health / ill health of a person was related to the state of their chi (pronounced 'chee') or energy.  When you are healthy your chi energy flows through the body freely evenly and with abundance resulting in your well being. When your free flow of energy is interrupted by conditions such as stress, injury, emotional trauma or infection you develop an imbalance or deficiency in your energy.  If the energy imbalance does not correct it may lead to ill health.

Acupuncture involves the placing of specially designed very fine needles and the application of warmth (moxibustion) on to precise areas of your skin called acupuncture points. These procedures can help restore the free flow of energy and with it you can start to return to health.

What is chi?

Chi is basically our 'vital energy'.  Chi is the 'energy of life', 'vital force', 'life force', immaterial  yet with substance. Chi is needed for our bodies to work, for our minds to function and to allow our spirits or 'joie de vivre' to shine.  Often people comment 'Oh I was so ill last week I had no energy to do anything but I am getting better I was able to go for a walk yesterday.' We all experience Chi on a continuous day to day basis. Our chi energy is affected by the way we live, the way we exercise, the food we eat and the air we breathe. Chi flows through us continuously until our last breath.

Near the skin surface it is said to specifically flow in invisible channels or lines of energy called 'meridians'. There are several pairs of these lines all over your body.  Along these lines are situated your acupuncture points.

"When you are healthy your chi energy flows through the body freely evenly and with abundance resulting in your well being."

There is scientific evidence for acupuncture, which shows some observable changes brought about from this ancient form of treatment.  However science is not yet and may never be able to measure every aspect of classical acupuncture on a human being.
