In traditional Chinese acupuncture healthy sleep is when you go to bed and fall asleep soon and that the quality or depth of sleep means that when you wake up you feel refreshed.

Young children are usually excellent sleepers. They only stay awake at night if they are ill, in pain, frightened or worried.

If you do not get normal refreshing sleep then we see this as  your 'chi' energy in your mind and spirit being disturbed. Failure to sleep properly is one of the clearest signals that something is wrong.

Often when people come to see us about a variety of health problems we find they are lacking in quality sleep as well. This frequently contributes to their health problems. A lot of western culture is now living in a chronic sleep deprived way of life. We do not rise and go to bed with the sun, so many people have trouble finding a rhythm that allows for good quality restful sleep.

Chronic lack of sleep causes a massive strain on the human body and mind. It has been associated with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack and stroke.

People who have quality sleep live longer than people who are sleep deprived. Interestingly, too much sleep – nine hours or more – can have adverse affects on a persons mortality rate as well.

So during your consultation and subsequent treatments we need to know quite a considerable amount of detail about your sleep, such as

With this last question the information revealed can be linked to a 24 hours Chinese circadian energy cycle. Any period of disturbed sleep during the night can be linked to an over or under functioning energy part of a person on this energy rhthym.

Sleeping tablets induce a drugged state for the mind -spirit and suppress the signals of distress.

Following a full consultation including looking at

we will work out the frequency and duration of acupuncture treatment. Most people will need weekly treatment to start off with. Very rarely we may have to do a few treatments very close together (ie within a few days) at the start of treatment.

We have noted that frequently when a health problem resolves we find the quality of sleep has also improved in some way. It is logical that helping a person keep a healthy sleep pattern may prevent health problems developing. A good night sleep is just as important for good health as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

So if you are having sleep difficulties consider getting some help with traditional Chinese acupuncture wherever you are in the country.
